Gabriel Alegría March 2008

Saturday February 28 & Sunday March 1

Snug Harbor
626 Frenchmen Street
New Orleans

Gabriel Alegría returned to New Orleans with some of Peru’s finest jazz musicians.   Trumpeter and composer Gabriel Alegría continued to chart a fresh new idiom, kicking up smoldering jazz with the intoxicating polyrhythms of coastal Perú. Combining his own distinctive approach to the jazz trumpet with the rich heritage of Afro-Peruvian music, Alegría was joined by saxophonist Laurandrea Leguía, guitarist Yuri Juárez, bassist Ramon de Bruyn, drummer Hugo Alcázar and master percussionist Freddy “Huevito” Lobatón-who plays traditional Afro-Peruvian instruments such as cajón (box drum) and quijada (jaw bone) and adds spectacular passages of zapateo dancing.Gabriel Alegría (Afroperuvian Jazz Sextet)

The concerts featured music from Alegría’s latest recording Nuevo Mundo which was released in 2008. This landmark recording features guest appearances by some of today’s jazz luminaries such as vocalist Tierney Sutton, multi-grammy award winning Russell Ferrante, and jazz legends Bill Watrous and Bobby Shew.  Alegría’s CD is available exclusively through www.gabrielalegria.com as well as information regarding the Afro-Peruvian jazz movement.
